Buying your first set of outdoor furniture can be a daunting task, but also as exciting as buying a new house! Before you rush out to the first shop, take the time to figure out the best pieces for your patio, deck, or porch. Here are 5 mistakes to avoid making when shopping for outdoor furniture.
1. Low-cost furniture may end up costing you more in the long run
When you start shopping around for outdoor furniture, be sure to review all options and most importantly the quality and additional offerings from the store. For example, furniture with very light frame might slide around too much and be very unstable when you sit on it. So, while it may be tempting, don’t automatically go for the cheapest price you can get on outdoor furniture as the really cheap stuff tends to be lightweight, flimsy and will not last very long.
2. Chair legs can be too skinny for decks.
While some outdoor chairs have beautifully crafted legs, some tend to be too skinny and thus do not necessary fit the needs of the outdoor space you have. For example, too skinny and the legs could always get caught in gaps or sink into the grass. So, ensure to choose an outdoor chair that fits well with the space and doesn’t turn into a hinderance to manage.
3. Choose your outdoor furniture materials wisely
Each material has its benefits not all are ideal for certain climates and outdoor situations. Not all materials are necessary universal for all climates and therefore, make sure you do your homework and ensure the material you pick agrees with the weather in your region and its exposure levels to the elements.
4. Be ready for the Rain
While outdoor furniture is designed to withstand the rain and elements to some degree, the cushions may not necessarily be weather proof and thus can spoil easily. While outdoor fabrics are durable and possible water-repellent, they are not water-proof, so, ensure to protect them. You’ll want to either bring the cushions indoors or cover them with a plastic sheet if you want them to last longer.
5. Don’t place furniture where it is likely to spoil
Try your best to place furniture away from certain areas which could ruin and reduce the life and look of the furniture. For example, bird droppings or color from berries dropped from a tree can leave stains which are impossible to remove. So, either find a way to protect the outdoor furniture or find another spot.
